East Twin LWD Project (Funded 2000)
Current Status: Active

This project will help to re-establish the dominant ecological processes of East Twin River to improve and protect water quality and productive fish habitats. The project will restore wood to the channels to provide for natural storage and routing of sediment as well as cover for fish; help to rebuild adequate riparian forests to improve fish habitat and water quality, and provide vital off-channel winter habitat for salmon.
It is anticipated the project will create about 3 miles of improved spawning habitat, 3 miles of improved rearing habitat and 4 miles of improved riparian forest habitat. The WRIA 19 Limiting Factor Analysis verifies that these channel reaches are LWD depleted and suffer from excessive sedimentation. Logging activities have also heavily impacted the riparian area.
LWD placement into Sadie Creek will be accomplished by tower and cable from existing landings and/or by helicopter. The Instream work in Sadie Creek will be done by a contracted "Spider". LWD placement into the East Twin will primarily be constructed conifer logjams done by track hoe. Some on site wood will be utilized in the East Twin; however, logs will be trucked in to meet the wood requirement. The East Twin segment will be modeled to emulate the Deep Creek and Little Hoko Restoration Projects. The Sadie Creek segment of the project will be used to evaluate the feasibility of employing this restoration technique on a much larger scale on other wet side rivers.
