Dungeness Water Conservation/ Instream Flows
(Funded 2000)
Current Status: Active
Salmon
habitat will be improved by increasing instream flows (especially during
critical low flows) by piping leaking irrigation canals in the
Dungeness watershed WRIA 18 Clallam Co. An estimated 5 cfs will be saved.
All stocks of Dungeness River salmon including listed Puget Sound chinook,
Hood Canal/Easter Strait of Juan de Fuca summer chum, bulltrout, pink
and steelhead will benefit from increased river flows. Proposed projects
are recommended in WRIA 18 Limiting Factors to address low flows & are
high priority in DRAWU Comprehensive Water Conservation Plan prepared
under Ref. 38. SEPA checklist was completed for the Plan. Increased flows
will also lower river temperatures; piping canals will eliminate the
introduction of pollutants into the Dungeness. The Jamestown S'Klallam
Tribe is the project sponsor partnering with the Water Users Association.
Work can begin immediately. Preliminary design/engineering is completed;
construction will be within existing rights of way; no additional permits
are required. Estimated costs come from State funds, Water users O&M
budget and inkind services. State dollars will go to contracted labor,
materials/equipment/project management and project success monitoring.
The WUA and Tribe will provide engineering, inspection, some labor/equipment.
Identical to past projects resulting in water left instream through irrigation
efficiency, this project will result in increased flows and quantifiable
increases in chinook salmon habitat.
